The UK film industry is thriving.
With international filmmakers from all reaches of the globe trusting their productions in the hands of home-grown UK talent, 2015 saw a huge rise in the number of international productions taking place within the United Kingdom, with blockbusters such as: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Spectre, and Pan all being made on British soil. This rise has also led to a growth in jobs within the industry.
Alongside this rise in international productions, the UK’s own productions have also stood strong. 2015 saw 74 home-grown films released with budgets of £500,000 and above. Just some of these titles included: Suffragette, Paddington, High Rise, Shaun the Sheep, Testament of Youth, and London Road.
So why is the UK so attractive to international filmmakers?
Well thanks to world-class facilities, UK film tax relief benefits, and many other services provided by the British Film Commission, Great Britain has truly shown those from overseas just how great we truly are.
How important in the film industry to the UK’s economy?
The UK film industry generates a significant value for the UK economy. In 2014, the industry generated a turnover of £9.1 billion.
2014 also broke a new record with the global theatrical market valued at just over $36 billion. UK films earned $4.7 billion of this amount (a 12.9% share).
British talent
UK films and talent won 29 awards during the 2014/2015 awards season, amounting to 19% of eligible awards.
The UK’s presence throughout international festivals is also something to celebrate, with Cannes seeing the launch of: Pride, Mr. Turner, Jimmy’s Hall, Catch Me Daddy, Queen and Country, Blood Cells, Bypass, The Goob in Venice, The Theory of Everything, The Imitation Game, Mr. Turner, X+Y, The Riot Club, A Little Chaos in Toronto, and 45 Years in Berlin.
